From the President

Kylie Mahony

As I write this term’s report, our very recent Winter Festival is still fresh in my memory. It was an absolutely wonderful event, and highly successful. I am sure everyone who attended now has the added bonus of starting Term 3 riding high on a wave of renewed enthusiasm and motivation! I know I have!

The event ran as smoothly as clockwork thanks to the thousands of hours contributed to its organization by our volunteers. Edwardstown Baptist Church turned out to be a perfect venue for us and it was wonderful for me to see smiles everywhere I went, and to be reminded what a special atmosphere of love and nurturing is created when Suzuki people get together.

Some highlights were the excellent standard of the solo concerts and seeing students of all ages and from different instruments playing and laughing together at lunchtime. I just loved watching the beautiful teaching of Yasuki Nakamura, and seeing even the babies in our community learning to love music in the ECE classes.  The final concert was especially moving. I was awestruck by the absolutely beautiful and sensitive playing of the Senior Orchestra who had only three hours of rehearsal! The little piano students lisping adorably and waving coloured scarves to “I Can Sing a Rainbow” actually moved me to tears. And best of all was the DVD Nada Brissenden had brought that showed Dr. Suzuki himself talking about his ideas, and many wonderful Japanese Suzuki children playing their little hearts out. It was a wonderful reminder that somehow this thing called the “Suzuki Method” has such universal truths at its core that it can start in a tiny town in Japan and spread all over the world, touching lives across continents and generations!

It is very exciting to think how close we are now to our other big event of the year – our Showcase Concert. Everyone will have a chance to perform, even the newest beginners! Please see inside the newsletter for more details and make sure you polish up the repertoire for this spectacular event!

See you at Elder Hall in August!
